Ladies and Gentlemen, this is my company. I was given the vision to start a company that will serve as the primary vehicle for my work as a playwright initially, then as it grows, groom aspiring playwrights, and stage their works. In addition, the company while embark into the growing indie film industry but maintain its' theatre roots. Also, HHP offers events with a cultural twist under the sub brand Kulture Groove. Lastly, Harkins House is set up to provide innovative services to meet the underserved needs of the Black community.
As it pertains to audiences, Harkins House aims to fill a void that exists between Broadway, which seldom reaches out to Black audiences, and typical urban theatre. HHP is intentionally a for-profit company that specializes in 'indie Black theatre', meaning it is not apart of the traditional theatre circuit nor is it structured to receive grants. Funds are raised through sponsorships/advertisers and special campaigns/events. The company was established this way to maintain artistic/creative control, fluidity in company operations, and less competition and politics while focusing primarily on promoting the work.
As of March 2018, Harkins House is eight years old and has two successful original stage plays to its' credit, FOUR WOMEN and The Man Store. While I am very proud of the company, it has a long way to go before it reaches its' pinnacle. I encourage all of you to support the company and its' vision.
